Tour de France

The Tour de France route for Sunday 8th July is now available. The riders will go through Southborough and Tunbridge Wells, then out towards Pembury. Should be interesting to see - perhaps a good vantage point would be just north of Soutborough Common, and watch them coming up that bastard of a hill from Tonbridge...

Brittany photoblog

Bridge and reflection at Bon Repos

Thanks to the owner of this blog for providing us almost daily with some nice photos of Brittany to look at.
One day I'm going to actually do what I've been telling myself I'll do for years: move to France! But right now it's not exactly convenient, not without uprooting my kids who are in school in Tunbridge Wells and rather attached to their friends and socializing opportunities in town...

Alemannisch

Interesting what you find out there on the web: I'd never heard of Alemannisch - but there seems to be a whole language movement out there which is supporting the German dialects of Southern Germany, Switzerland, and neighbouring areas. See their own Alemannisch Wikipedia.

what about the regions?
Encherissimmo Any good?? Who knows...

Yahoo France main rubric for property:
Yahoo! Commerce et conomie>Immobilier et logement

contains subrubrics for small ads etc...
According to many guides the best deals can be had at auctions (encheres?)

Immobilier bretagne : maison morbihan, maison bord de mer. Le Bec immobilier, Bretagne sud

Lebec Immobilier. OK, this is just about the 1st thing that a search on yahoo.fr turned up. I want to just start logging things in case they are useful though... my initial suspicion is that French language sites will give a better picture than English language "French country property" sites which may be a bit more opportunistically homing in on would be expats who are desperate to escape the UK...

There's going to be a new thread to this weblog. As well as wibbling on about Java/webapps, I'm also looking at a long-term plan to get a place in France. I would like to live there permanently one day, but whether I try to get a second home there or move lock, stock and barrel, we shall see. Depends what Helen and the girls want to do.
So you" will probably start seeing links and notes on this subject appearing in this weblog.

*Who is the "you" I am talking about?? Who's going to be reading this apart from me???

The background to this is:
1. I would like to get "a place in the country", with space to grow vegetables, go for walks, etc.
2. I want it to be in France coz I speak the language, and feel aligned with the way of life there (or at least, more so than that of "Pudding Island" (as Lawrence Durrell used to call England, according to William Boyd)).
3. Career-wise I am hoping to be able to move towards a more independent technology career, where I can perhaps do some work from home etc. (So of course my choice of location is going to depend on ability to get a reasonable network connection!).
4. Helen says she'd like to live in France but not too far south as it's too hot.
5. Property prices are a lot cheaper still in France, out in the country anyway. As long as you don't go to the Cote d'Azur...
